The Department of Anesthesiology is comprised of 26 board-certified and board-eligible physicians, 15 certified registered nurse anesthetists, a pain management nurse clinician and three anesthesia technicians. Many of the anesthesiologists have additional expertise in subspecialties including pediatric, cardiac, neuroanesthesia, obstetrical anesthesia, and pain management. These physicians and nurse anesthetists are committed to delivering the highest quality of care and ensuring the safety and comfort of NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens patients.
The anesthesia staff provides services for all patients requiring such services in the main operating room, ambulatory surgery unit and the labor and delivery suite. In addition, the Department also provides anesthesia services to patients who require services in Invasive Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Endoscopy, MRI and CT Scan, and the Electrophysiology Laboratory.
The Obstetrical Anesthesia Division offers anesthesia services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Pre-delivery interviews are available to help prepare and educate the pregnant woman as to what anesthetic assistance is available at the time of delivery. All patients are made aware of the patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) services available for their comfort post delivery. Anesthesia consultations are provided to promote safe delivery for high-risk pregnancy patients. Click here to read more about obstetrical anesthesiology.
The Acute Pain Service provides pain management and symptom relief to post surgical patients using safe, effective, and innovative therapies to ensure the patient’s maximum comfort level. The department has a nurse clinician who specializes in pain management.
A chronic pain management specialist is available for consultations on inpatients that have pain caused by chronic conditions or cancer.
The Pre-Admission Center’s mission is to safely prepare patients and their families for their upcoming surgery or procedure. The Pre-admission Physician Assistants will review your health history questionnaire, perform your history and physical, conduct an anesthesia assessment and provide you with pre-operative instructions. The center’s technicians will perform your electrocardiogram and draw your blood. A visit to this center allows the patient the opportunity to have all registration, testing, history & physical and pre-operative teaching coordinated in one visit.
The department offers rotations for residents in various subspecialties such as medicine, dentistry, emergency medicine, and podiatry. The department also participates in educating those earning paramedic certification through the Department of Emergency Medicine in airway management and provides physician assistants in the Pre-Admission Center with airway assessment training.
