Resident Appointment and Reappointment

Effective Date: 7/1/97
Reviewed/Revised:  5/20/05, 5/5/09

Number:  9200-201

All residents are appointed by the Board of Trustees to the Medical Staff as members of the Graduate Staff.  A personalized Graduate Staff Agreement of Employment & Appointment will be issued by the Office of Graduate Medical Education and must be executed by all residents and fellows upon such appointment.  All Graduate Staff Agreements of Employment & Appointment are for one year and each resident must be reappointed for each subsequent year of training, contingent upon satisfactory completion of the current post-graduate year.   The New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens will honor the full term of the Graduate Staff Agreement of Employment & Appointment except when a resident’s performance justifies termination.

A resident whose performance has been satisfactory or above will be reappointed no later than four months prior to the end of the current contract year.

Recommendations for the appointment and reappointment of residents should be initiated by departments and programs and sent to the Office of Graduate Medical Education who will then issue the Graduate Staff Agreement of Employment & Appointment.

A resident whose performance has failed to meet the level of competence for reappointment in a subsequent year shall be notified by his/her department in writing.  Specific guidelines for decision on termination or non-reappointment are found in the Graduate Staff Evaluation, Disciplinary Procedures & Appeals Policy (Due Process).
