Flushing, NY – On Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 12 p.m., Assemblywoman Grace Meng (D-Flushing) and New York Hospital Queens announced our first ever Community Baby Shower. The baby shower is specifically geared towards low income families in the Queens area. As the number of low income families have risen over the past few years, our office felt it is important to organize a baby shower for the single mothers who are experiencing the effects of this economy even more sharply and need ways to manage.

Assemblywoman Meng hopes that with the community’s support, our baby shower will provide the necessary supplies for expectant mothers, as well as mothers who have recently given birth. Assemblywoman Meng said, “this baby shower will be a good opportunity to provide assistance to those who really need it. I want to thank our sponsors in advance as your assistance will be a great relief for those who are facing difficulty in these economically troubled times.”

David Chiang, M.D., attending physician, New York Hospital Queens, assistant professor, Weill Medical College Cornell University, stated, “Thank you to Assemblywoman Grace Meng for reaching out to the many mothers-to-be in our community. Expectant mothers need prenatal care as soon as they find out they are pregnant. This leads to the best outcomes for both mother and baby. Of note, our Family Health Center in Flushing helps families stay healthy and reaches out to the Asian American community with a full range of services in any language.”

Gary Eglinton, M.D., chairman, department of Ob/Gyn, New York Hospital Queens stated, “A pregnancy can be one of life’s most rewarding moments. Naturally, expectant mothers have many important questions and concerns. I encourage expectant mothers to seek regular consultation and prenatal care. Even with the best prenatal care, sometimes complications can occur before or during childbirth. It is important to use a hospital that has the expertise to be able to respond immediately if a problem arises. At NYHQ, we help families prepare for childbirth with everything from fertility services to high-risk pregnancy care.”
