Breastfeeding - The Gold Standard in Infant Feeding

Flushing, New York - Today marks the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week—a time to raise awareness among expecting and new moms that breastfeeding has been shown to be the healthiest nutrition choice for mom and baby.

In 2007, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services published a comprehensive analysis of studies on the impact of breastfeeding in developing countries. Conclusions from the study found that breastfed babies gain a number of health advantages. The benefits for babies include a reduced risk of middle ear infections, respiratory and stomach/intestinal infections, skin allergies, asthma, obesity, diabetes, childhood leukemia and sudden infant death syndrome. In addition, studies show that some breastfeeding mothers have a reduced risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cancer and type 2 diabetes.

New York Hospital Queens understands there are challenges a breastfeeding mother can face. According to the International Lactation Consultant Association, one big challenge is that women do not get the support that they need from the communities where they live. New York Hospital Queens joins breastfeeding advocacy groups by spreading awareness and education on the importance of breastfeeding to its health professionals, employees and the community.

New York Hospital Queens helps its new mothers on the path to breastfeeding success by providing a monthly breastfeeding class, a dedicated lactation room and the assistance of a lactation specialist (who teaches new mothers how to breastfeed and deals with breastfeeding challenges). The hospital offers free breast pumps and supplies to its new mothers on an inpatient basis, as well as a dedicated phone line (718) 661-7660 for mothers to call with questions 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

To support the important message during World Breastfeeding Week, the hospital’s maternity team is hosting a free, special raffle for all its new mothers. Raffle gifts include a baby monitor, Babies R Us gift card and “baby girl” and “baby boy” gift baskets.

Having a baby is one of life’s biggest occasions. The maternity team at New York Hospital Queens does everything it can to make childbirth as enjoyable as possible. The hospital provides a variety of educational classes and tours before birth. New mothers enjoy “rooming-in” with their newborn until it’s time to go home. All the while, New York Hospital Queens’ unique Team Blue watches over the health and safety of each mother and baby.
