Cardio-Thoracic Surgery

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery was created in 1996, the year that the borough of Queens received its long-awaited approval to provide cardiac surgical services at The New York Hospital Queens. Since that time, the program has blossomed into a busy service boasting superb outcomes and the ability to carry out the most sophisticated of procedures. As part of the multidiciplinary Kyrenia Heart Center, the Cardio-thoracic program works in cooperation with a large staff of clinical and interventional cardiologists in order to provide care that is coordinated and comprehensive.

The Department was established with the goal of providing patients throughout the borough with excellent cardiac surgical care in addition to the thoracic surgical services already offered. Heading the Department is O. Wayne Isom, MD, as Chairman, and Mark Adkins, MD, as director of cardiothoracic surgery. The department performs large numbers of cardiac surgical procedures including single and multiple valve replacements, coronary artery bypass grafting procedures, as well as minimally invasive coronary artery bypass procedures that are performed without need of the heart-lung bypass machine.

Superb Facilities

In the Department's Cardiovascular Recovery Unit (CVRU), skilled, effective and compassionate care is provided to cardiovascular patients, including those who have undergone either cardiac surgery or interventional cardiology procedures. The CVRU originally occupied a part of the hospital's eighth floor, but patient volume increases have since been remedied by the construction of a brand new, state-of-the-art wing on the second floor.

Shortly after NYHQ initiated its cardiac surgery program, highly skilled interventional cardiologists began performing the most advanced cardiac procedures in the world (such as coronary stenting and laser procedures) in the medical center's state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratory. This lab, under the direction of Stylianos Papadakos, MD, has expanded its interventional cardiology capabilities as part of the Kyrenia Cardiac Center. This comprehensive center for treatment and research brings together the surgical, interventional, diagnostic and rehabilitative services needed for the most successful treatment of cardiac illness.
