Whether you are suffering from a minor or serious illness or injury, you want an emergency room service that delivers rapid, expert medical care. But you also want emergency room staff members who show concern for the dignity, comfort, and confidentiality of their patients. The New York Hospital Queens considers the total needs of its patients, offering comprehensive care with a human touch.

An Expert Team at the Ready

The department is staffed by highly qualified professionals who are dedicated to healing and trained to provide the best care in the fastest possible time.

All physicians specialize in emergency medicine and are certified in advanced cardiac life support, advanced trauma life support, and pediatric advanced life support. Physician assistants and nurses specially trained in emergency medicine and trauma are skilled in identifying urgent medical conditions that require immediate intervention.

Each patient receives appropriate medical screening immediately upon arrival and is triaged into one of four, distinct care areas. Patients suffering from serious medical conditions that must be treated aggressively and patients with minor emergencies are cared for in separate treatment areas.

Trauma Center Services

The emergency department at NYHQ has been designated by the New York State Department of Health a Level 1 Trauma Center and treats more than 1,000 adult and pediatric trauma cases each year. The Trauma Center offers an expert staff of physicians specializing in surgery, anesthesia, orthopedics, vascular radiology, and other specialties to treat all traumatic injuries.

Fast Track Care

For less serious problems such as sore throats, cuts and rashes, the department's "Fast Track" section offers immediate and rapid evaluations from 8 a.m. until midnight, seven days a week. A separate entrance helps speed patients into a registration and waiting area designed for Fast-Track patients. A separate staff specially trained to handle minor emergencies can triage and treat patients within 45 minutes.

Because of NYHQ's affiliation with The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, one of the nation's most prominent teaching hospitals, the medical center offers the latest in emerging technologies and specialty treatment.

Specialized Care

The center provides the latest in care for patients with cardiac emergencies such as chest pain, heart attack, and high blood pressure. NYHQ offers up-to-the-minute cardiac monitoring devices, including an external cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator, and provides advanced treatment to dissolve dangerous blood clots that could cause a heart attack.

  • A special, 24-hour pediatric emergency room staffed by pediatricians treats children ranging in age from infancy to 19 years
  • A separate and self-contained isolation room is available for patients with infectious and airborne diseases
  • An orthopedic treatment area offers services such as casting, splinting, and bandaging.

For more specialized care, a team of experts from pulmonology, cardiology, and perinatology are available 24 hours a day.

A wide array of diagnostic tests, including X-ray and sophisticated imaging capabilities like MRI and CT scans are located immediately adjacent to the emergency department. Blood bank and vascular radiology services to detect strokes and injuries to blood vessels are also nearby. Highly advanced and specialized services including angioplasty, cardiac catheterization and cardiac surgery are available at the medical center.

On Call Ambulance Service

NYHQ also offers on-call ambulance service to Queens residents who wish to be transported to the medical center for emergency treatment or admission. The ambulance service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is staffed by New York State certified EMTs and paramedics who specialize in treating all types of emergencies. Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans are accepted. Call (718) 670-2222 and the medical center will dispatch an ambulance to you immediately. Of course, if you need emergency treatment outside the hours of operation, dial 911.

Visiting

NYHQ welcomes visitors to its emergency department for short visits at 10 minutes to every hour. However, it is in the best interest of the patient to limit visitors to one at the bedside. Of course, all visitation is at the discretion of the nurse in charge. Please note that the emergency department does not permit visitation during the following times:

  • 6:50 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.
  • 2:50 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • 10:50 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
