Is Your Doctor Asking You To Go to the NYHQ Emergency Department? |
What Should I Bring to the ED? |
|
| Ask your physician to call ahead to speak to an Emergency Physician (Contact numbers are listed above) to discuss your case before you arrive. That way, we can provide you with the most efficient and accurate care. |
In an emergency, it may not be possible to collect any information or items. However, when you have time there are some things you or someone you live with can do to allow us to help you more quickly and accurately:
|
An
Expert Team at the Ready. The ED is staffed by highly
qualified professionals who are dedicated to healing and trained to
provide the best care as quickly as possible. All physicians specialize
in emergency medicine and are certified in advanced cardiac life
support, advanced trauma life support, and pediatric advanced life
support. Physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and registered
nurses specially trained in emergency medicine and trauma are skilled in
identifying urgent medical conditions that require immediate
intervention. Each patient receives appropriate medical screening
immediately upon arrival and is triaged into one of four distinct care
areas. Patients suffering from serious medical conditions that must be
treated aggressively and patients with minor emergencies are cared for
in separate treatment areas.
Level 1 Trauma Center. Our Emergency Department has been designated by the New York State Department of Health as regional Level 1 Trauma Center and treats more than 1,000 adult and pediatric trauma cases each year. This designation means that a complete support staff of physicians is always available to treat life-threatening traumatic injuries, and includes specialists in surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesia, orthopaedics, vascular radiology, and others.
New
York State-Designated Stroke Center. New York Hospital Queens
is a New York State-Designated Regional Stroke Center. This means that
the highest standard of quality, access to care, the latest technology
and medicines are employed when treating patients who are suffering from
acute stroke, both in the Emergency Department and throughout
hospitalization. Specialist physicians in stroke care are always
available. Emergency staff receive ongoing training and education
regarding diagnosis and therapy for stroke.
Designated Emergency Heart Care Station. The Emergency Department is the entry point for a range of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities offered by New York Hospital Queens for treatment of acute cardiac conditions including heart attack. The emergency staff is well-trained in immediate actions that are necessary in rapidly identifying patients with acute cardiac conditions, and works in concert with the Division of Cardiology and Interventional cardiologists to provide access to urgent angioplasty, "clot-busting" medications such as t-PA that dissolve dangerous blood clots, as well as cardiac surgery.
Fast Track Care. For less serious problems such as sore throats, cuts and rashes, the Department's Fast Track section offers immediate and rapid evaluations 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. A separate entrance helps speed patients into registration and there is a waiting area designed for Fast Track patients. A separate staff is specially trained to handle minor emergencies can triage and treat patients efficiently.
Special Services. Because of New York Hospital Queens' affiliation with New York-Presbyterian/Cornell, one of the nation's most prominent teaching hospitals, the medical center offers the latest in emerging technologies and specialty treatment that includes a burn unit and comprehensive pediatric specialty services.
On-Call Ambulance Service. NYHQ also offers its own ambulance service to Queens residents who wish to be transported to the medical center for emergency treatment or admission. The ambulance service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is staffed by New York State certified EMTs and paramedics who specialize in treating all types of emergencies. Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans are accepted. Call (718) 670-2222 and the medical center will dispatch an ambulance to you immediately.
Visiting. NYHQ welcomes visitors to its Emergency Department for short visits. However, it is in the best interest of the patient to limit visitors to one at the bedside. All visitation is at the discretion of the nurse in charge.
