About Our Care Units in the Hospital

The Heart and Vascular Center provides specialized services to patients with cardiac disease. The Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), the Cardiovascular Recovery Unit (CVRU), and the cardiology telemetry unit (2 North) are staffed by heart and vascular specialists. These areas are all equipped with state-of-the-art patient monitoring devices.

Coronary Care Unit

The Coronary Care Unit is a 13-bed unit for patients with the most serious and acute cardiac illnesses such as heart attacks, unstable heart rhythms or acute heart failure.

A team of specialized nurses and physician assistants trained in the monitoring and management of cardiac patients work closely with clinical and interventional cardiologists, house staff, and technicians to bring the highest level of care to the most severely ill patients. Emmanuel Moustakakis, M.D. is the director of the Coronary Care Unit.

A full complement of hemodynamic, arrhythmia, respiratory monitoring and related support devices are available to provide physicians and nurses with the information necessary to optimize patient care.

Cardiovascular Recovery Unit

The Cardiovascular Recovery Unit is an 8-bed unit for cardiac surgery patients who receive close monitoring during the critical time immediately following cardiac surgery.

This unit is equipped to monitor and support heart and lung function. Directed by a cardiac anesthesiologist, the team includes an intensivist, cardiac surgeons, physician assistants and specially trained nurses. 

Telemetry/Stepdown Units

The Telemetry (36 beds) and Stepdown Units (6 beds) are designed for patients with heart disease who require heart rhythm monitoring, specialized diagnostic and interventional procedures, or specific therapy and monitoring. This unit, located on 2 North, is for those individuals who are recovering from cardiac surgery, coronary interventions such as stent placement, cardiac electrophysiological procedures such as pacemaker implantations, or patients needing specific drugs for heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias or angina.

Patient care is provided by an attending cardiologist who oversees a dedicated house staff team. These physicians work together with a group of nurses and nurse practitioners trained to meet the special needs of patients with heart disease. Comprehensive disease management strategies include aggressive medical therapies, patient education, lifestyle information and risk modification. Pharmacists, physical therapists, case managers and nutritionists complete the team that brings a full complement of services to patients.
