Research at The New York Hospital Queens

The Lang Center for Research and Education was established in 2001 at The New York Hospital Queens. We believe that a strong research and education program provides an important stimulus and culture that fosters excellence in clinical care. Our goal is to create new knowledge by conducting ‘cutting edge’ clinical research, and to integrate excellent clinical care with research and education.

Our mission is to provide a research infrastructure that will facilitate the conduct of clinical research at New York Hospital Queens. This includes securing research funding from outside sources (government, industry, foundation), providing statistical and grant writing assistance, as well as coordinating needs from various departments so that resources can be utilized with maximum benefit to all.

About the Langs    |   About the Director   |   Institutional Review Board

There are many exciting research projects in progress. New York Hospital Queens and the Lang Center are at the forefront of clinical diabetes research. We are participating in two important government sponsored (National Institutes of Health) studies of diabetes and heart disease. New York Hospital Queens is the only hospital in Queens, and the only hospital in The New York Presbyterian Network that is participating in BARI 2D. This study, will attempt to determine the optimum treatment for coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes. Subjects who are enrolled will have the opportunity to receive coordinated specialty care and extra support to help get their disease under control. Some medications will be available at no cost.

A second NIH sponsored trial called ACCORD is also being conducted. This study will evaluate strategies to prevent heart disease and other complications of diabetes by focusing on aggressive control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides). Subjects who enroll in this study will have the opportunity to receive state of the art management of their diabetes.

There are 70 other research studies currently in progress at New York Hospital Queens. State of the art treatments in kidney disease, cancer, heart failure, radiation oncology, pediatrics, and obstetrics, just to name a few, are being tested here by physicians on staff. New York Hospital Queens is at the forefront of new treatments for West Nile Virus, HIV, and Hepatitis C.

We firmly believe that participating in the evaluation of new treatments benefits patients, doctors and the hospital. For more information regarding clinical trials of new therapies at New York Hospital Queens please call Karen Hultberg at 718-670-2840.
