Life and Legacy of Philanthropist Theresa Lang Remembered at New York Hospital Queens Gala

Flushing, NY, June 2, 2009 - Late philanthropist, Theresa Lang, was remembered as a compassionate matriarch of the New York Hospital Queens family during the hospital’s A Spring Night Gala at Lincoln Center this Monday. More than 2,600 people attended the ceremony, which also featured a performance by Linda Eder and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. The hospital raised $2.1 million throughout the course of the evening.

Theresa Lang, who passed away last June at the age of 90, served as a volunteer, trustee and philanthropist of New York Hospital Queens for more than 40 years.  Her distinguished career with the hospital began as a volunteer in 1958, shortly after the hospital opened. She was a founding member of the Women’s Auxiliary. Lang served as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1973 until her death last year.

President and CEO, Stephen S. Mills, stated, “She inspired hundreds of people in our hospital with her optimism. Perseverance and generosity marked her personal life and transcended to the hospital she loved.”

To this day, her legacy lives on in the influence she had on the staff, and in the hallways of New York Hospital Queens in the form of the Theresa Lang Center for Research and Education, Theresa Lang Children’s Ambulatory Care Center and the Theresa Lang Pediatric Emergency Room.

“Terry recognized the greatness of New York Hospital Queens and we should all be honored that Theresa Lang lives on in each of us,” said George F. Heinrich, MD, Chairman, Board of Trustees. “She recognized that there was a special love in each of us.”

“For me personally, Terry was the essence of dignity, refinement and encouragement,” Mills said. “Her generous spirit and her ever present enthusiasm served to provide me with energy and tenacity to take on the projects, programs and conflicts, which are ever present."
