The Challenge
We understand that a good environment contributes to a patient’s healing process, safety, and satisfaction. And, over the years, we have become the hospital of choice in Queens for those who seek a higher level of health care where they live, work, and play. Although we are very proud of this, we realized that continuing to expand our quality services within an already very full facility would be a challenge.
The Overview
In 2007, we began a massive modernization program to expand and renovate New York Hospital Queens and, in the process, help to transform health care in Queens. We completed the new building, which is the centerpiece of this expansion, in the summer of 2010.
The Details
- Ground was broken in early 2007 for our new seven-story “West Wing.” This ambitious $210 million modernization program remained on track and was opened in September 2010.
- The new wing adds 190,000 square feet to the hospital overall. A new main entrance for patients and visitors and the entire new wing incorporates a design that is modern and welcoming with natural light atriums.
- The ground floor includes a new main entrance on Main Street. The new entry court has a covered drop-off/pick-up with multiple lanes to facilitate traffic flow through the area and access to a light-filled atrium and reception lobby. Inside the lobby, visitors are greeted by a concierge, meditation rooms, chapels, a gift shop and comforting amenities.
- Additional services for patients are housed throughout the new facility. For the convenience of patients having same-day surgery, the ground floor features an Ambulatory Surgery Center, with 10 state-of-the-art operating rooms and 33 recovery beds. The hospital's capacity for ambulatory surgery will increase in response to a national trend, as well as a need in Queens; today more surgical procedures are less invasive and do not require an overnight hospital stay.
- Also among the core programs in the new wing is our growing Heart & Vascular Center. We bring together all existing services plus new procedure electrophysiology suites for pacemaker and internal defibrillator procedures, plus a one-of-a-kind "hybrid OR" suite for interventional radiology and endovascular procedures that can be converted to perform vascular surgery procedures in the same room. The newly constructed area allows for the treatment of twice as many patients simultaneously by increasing treatment rooms from five to 10.
- Two floors of the new wing are dedicated to medical and surgical inpatient care with a total of 80 beds– 40 per floor. This includes 28 private rooms and 26 semi-private rooms. One of these floors includes a patient care area for orthopaedics and rehabilitation with a state-of-the-art gym for patients who are hospitalized and require physical therapy to restore their strength and mobility before being discharged to continue their recovery in an outpatient program.
- During the early phase of the construction process, two floors were added onto the five floors originally planned. These two additional floors will not be outfitted for treatment areas at this time.
- The completion and grand opening of the hospital’s new parking facility on Booth Memorial Avenue occurred at the end of 2008. The three-level garage is conveniently located across the street from the hospital and offers over 370 parking spaces for patients, visitors and physicians.
