Medical Experts from New York Hospital Queens to Weigh In on Fighting Childhood Obesity

EVENT: 
New York Hospital Queens is hosting a seminar for teachers, parents and pediatricians on ways to improve the health of obese and overweight children and teach sustainability of the right choices for a healthier life. This educational program factors in physical, psychological, social and nutritional components of childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is reaching epidemic proportions in our country. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the rate of obesity in 6-11 year-old American children has more than doubled to 17 percent (from 6.5 percent) since 1980. During the same time period, the rate of obesity in American teenagers has more than tripled to 17.6 percent (from 5 percent). Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

WHO: 
Children’s health experts from New York Hospital Queens, personnel from the hospital’s FitKids program, and the NYHQ College developed this educational seminar. Children enrolled in the hospital’s FitKids Program will give an exercise demonstration for seminar participants. FitKids is a free exercise and nutrition program offered to the hospital’s young patients who have an elevated body mass index.
