Message from the Program Director

Armando Castro, MD, FACS

Welcome to the Department of Surgery at The New York Hospital, Queens.  We appreciate your interest in our training program, and hope that you find the information we provide helpful in getting to know more about us.

Our general surgery residency program offers bright, highly motivated individuals the opportunity to acquire the most advanced technical skills and surgical knowledge necessary to become a skillful, compassionate and well-rounded general surgeon. Graduates from our program have gone on to competitive and well-respected fellowships while some have chosen to enter clinical practice. Our exceptional faculty members are experts in their fields of practice and are dedicated to training future surgeons.  Our faculty members are active participants in a well-structured and rigorous academic curriculum that allows for acquisition of clinical and theoretical surgical knowledge, with protected time for all educational conferences.

Our program is fully accredited by the ACGME Residency Review Committee (RRC) in Surgery, with 5 categorical positions in the five-year program as well as 6 preliminary internship positions.

The program offers clinical experience in acute and outpatient settings in a very busy and expanding tertiary care and level 1 trauma center.  As the major teaching hospital in the borough of Queens, our residents are exposed to the breadth of surgical diseases and pathology.  We encourage and support opportunities for basic and clinical surgical research if a resident chooses to take time out of clinical training.

Our curriculum is competency—based and inclusive of all required disciplines, in compliance with the RRC.  Upon completion of our residency training program, graduates gain an in-depth experience in general surgery, trauma, surgical oncology, endocrine surgery, vascular surgery, transplantation, MIS, pediatric surgery, thoracic surgery, colorectal surgery, plastic surgery and urology. Chief residents are exposed to the highest acuity surgery that a tertiary care, university-affiliated, Level 1 Trauma center can provide. Our graduates complete their training in all the required disciplines without difficulty.  Each resident usually performs more than 1,000 operations upon completion.  Residents are expected to publish a peer-reviewed article before graduation and all of our residents present at regional and national meetings.

Thank you for your interest in our general surgery training program. We are committed to excellence in training of future surgeons in a supportive and diverse environment, while providing the highest quality, compassionate care to our community of patients.  I believe our program affords our graduates the highest quality and well-balanced training that allows them to excel in surgical practice.
