More Than 700 Queens Nurses Saluted During National Nurse’s Week

Friday, May 11, 2007

Flushing, New York - New York Hospital Queens celebrated 700 nurses during National Nurse’s Week with a Broadway themed event complete with music from popular Tony-winning shows and a “streets of New York” food menu. Nurses donned costumes of their favorite Broadway star, past and present. Nurses also applauded the heartfelt keynote address by former Queens Borough President and retired nurse, Claire Shulman.

“We proudly recognize our nurses during National Nurse’s Week and appreciate their dedication, skill, compassion, and professionalism every day,” said Stephen S. Mills, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We thank them for their extraordinary contributions to patient care 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.”

Sandra Shivamber, RNC, BSN, a registered nurse in Pediatrics since 1987 who resides in New Hyde Park, was named Nurse of the Year for her caring, compassion and service to patients and her collaboration with other members of the hospital staff. The award presentation included additional awards for “nurse of compassion,” nursing attendant of the year, a clinical assistant scholarship and an award for scholarly achievement.

“National Nurses Week is a time to celebrate the profession of nursing, it’s also how we recognize the qualities and characteristics of the nurses themselves,” said Michaelle Williams, RN, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services. “We honor our nurses for their professional practice and sincere concern for patients and their families.”

National Nurses Week was developed by the American Nurse’s Association as a way to raise public awareness of the value of nursing and to help educate the public about the vital roles nurses play in meeting the health care needs of the American people.
