Flushing, New York - Roxana (Stoica) Vartolomei, M.D., has been named Medical Director of Echocardiography Services for the Heart and Vascular Center at New York Hospital Queens. Since January 2007, she has served as acting director. She is board certified in Cardiovascular Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology, and Adult Echocardiography.
Echocardiography is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that evaluates the structure and function of the heart by using sound waves to produce a moving picture of the heart and heart valves. Echo tests, as they are commonly called, can be used to assess the health of the valves and chambers of the heart, as well as to measure cardiac output. Tremendous advances in non-invasive techniques now give physicians additional tools to assess an individual’s risk of heart attack, and help guide treatment choices for cardiac disease.
Dr. Vartolomei joined the hospital as a non-invasive cardiologist in August 2005, and she serves as a key faculty member in the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program. After completing a cardiology fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center, Dr. Vartolomei completed an additional fellowship year in non-invasive cardiology at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center.
The Heart & Vascular Center’s Echocardiography Laboratory at New York Hospital Queens recently become one of only a few in the area to be accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echo Laboratories (ICAEL). According to the ICAEL, the accreditation process ensures high quality patient care and promotes health care by providing a mechanism to encourage and recognize the provision of quality echocardiographic diagnostic evaluations by a process of voluntary accreditation. Because accreditation is renewed every three years, a long-term commitment to quality and self-assessment is developed and maintained.
