New York Hospital Queens Corporate College Receives Grant From Roslyn Savings Foundation for Cultural Competency Program

Flushing, New York - New York Hospital Queens College was recently awarded a $25,000 grant by the Roslyn Savings Foundation. NYHQ College will utilize this grant to develop a pilot program for employees on cultural competency. Cultural competency is defined as understanding, appreciating, and interacting successfully with people of different and diverse backgrounds. The Foundation is the charitable arm of the Roslyn Savings Bank.

NYHQ was one of the first health care organizations in the country to create a corporate college. Known as New York Hospital Queens College, this core educational resource serves the hospital’s more than 3,000 hospital employees. Many of the courses offered are taught by the faculty of Queens College with whom the hospital’s College has formed a partnership.

“Queens is the most diverse community in the United States, and helping our employees to understand the cultural norms and needs of their co-workers and patients, is a significant and ongoing focus of our corporate learning program, said Patricia Woods, Ph.D., Chief Learning Officer, NYHQ. We are very grateful to the Roslyn Savings Foundation for this grant and will use the award to remain on the forefront of cultural diversity education.”

New York Hospital Queens College, established in 2001, emphasizes continuous technical and intellectual development for all employees. The College curriculum currently covers more than 30 subjects, under four different categories: professional development, general business skills, health care fundamentals, and executive sessions.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary as a charitable organization, the Roslyn Savings Foundation and has granted $15 million to date. The Foundation assists local non-profit organizations including educational institutions and health-related organizations, as well as cultural activities centered in the heart of the community.

New York Hospital Queens is a member of the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System and is an affiliate of Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
