warhol_michaelFlushing, New York - Michael Warhol, MD, has been appointed Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Clinical Laboratories at New York Hospital Queens. He joins the hospital after the retirement of Daisy Saw, MD, who had served the hospital for the past 15 years—the last two years as Chairman.

Dr. Warhol comes to this position with more than 38 years of experience from a variety of hospitals, including most recently his positions in Philadelphia at Pennsylvania Hospital as the Director of Laboratories and Chairman of Pathology and at Wills Eye Hospital as a Consultant in Pathology.

“Our Department of Pathology and Clinical Laboratories is one of the busiest services in the hospital. It offers a full range of diagnostic analysis—on items such as blood samples, tissue specimens, and cultures— both in our hospital and for physician’s offices throughout Queens,” said Stephen S. Mills, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are very fortunate to have such an experienced clinician like Dr. Warhol for a leader of our team.”

Dr. Warhol has held faculty appointments in pathology at Harvard Medical School, the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State University and Thomas Jefferson University. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Radioisotope Pathology and Cytopathology.

His major research interests include molecular diagnosis and testing, and, computer assisted diagnosis.

“I’m excited to pursue the opportunities of establishing a molecular and genetic testing program at the hospital,” said Dr. Warhol. “This will not only aid in diagnosis of disease, but allow use to better understand disease in our diverse patient population.”

He said he’s looking at ways to expand the scope and extent of the activities of the hospital’s Charter Diagnostic Laboratory (DCL), a service that operates similar to a commercial laboratory. CDL offers community-based blood-drawing laboratory facilities for the patients of Queens doctors. CDL also collects and analyzes specimens from doctor’s offices and offers consultation services for physicians on their patient’s results.

Dr. Warhol completed his undergraduate education at Princeton University and earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Captain from 1969 to 1974, while completing his residency in pathology at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston.
