SURGICAL TRAINING PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
PGY-5 Chief Resident:
Goals:
- To assume responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the various surgical services.
- To supervise and teach junior residents and medical students.
- To demonstrate the capability for independent function in all aspects of patient management (i.e. Leadership)
- To act as the patient advocate, coordinating all of their care within the medical system.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuity of patient care.
The Chief Surgical Resident is responsible for all aspects of patient care for his/her team.
I Day-to-Day Operations:
Competency-Based Knowledge Objectives:
1a. Exercise an independent approach to patient management and to serve as consultant for the senior surgical residents.
1b. Act as primary surgeon for unassigned (no private physician) emergency room, trauma, and inpatient consults.
1c. Discuss patient management in SICU and Emergency Room.
1d. Demonstrate ability to evaluate, resuscitate, and initiate surgical management of trauma patients.
Competency-Based Performance Objectives:
1e. Delegate daily tasks to senior and junior house staff.
1f. Initiate surgical management of trauma patients (e.g. thoracotomy, airway) and supervise all level I trauma patients.
1g. Act as surgeon or teacher during all surgical procedures (e.g. restorative proctocolectomy, esophagogastrectomy, Whipple, liver resections, laparotomy and thoracotomy for trauma).
1h. Supervise and act as consultant in outpatient surgical clinics.

II Supervision and Teaching:
Competency-Based Performance Objectives:
2a. Perform formal evaluation of senior and junior house staff. Discuss performance measures of each resident with attending faculty.
2b. Effect exchange of information with patients families and other professional staff (e.g. nursing, radiology, socialservices/case management, nutrition) in a sensitive and caring manner.
2c. Supervise and credential senior house staff.
2d. Select and present topics/cases of Grand Rounds/M&M.
2e. Serve as resource figure and teaching assistant to residents.
2f. Act as professional role model.
2g. Assume responsibility for daily OR assignments, monthly teaching calendar, and on-call schedule.
