Meet the team

The Pediatric Asthma Center was opened in April 1994, to provide comprehensive disease management based protocols for children with asthma from infancy through age 18.

The Center offers a unique program of sophisticated testing, careful monitoring, continual care and a highly personalized course of protocol driven treatment by specialists in the care of asthma.

The protocol has written guidelines for:

Physician Intervention
Treatment Optimization
Continuity of Care
Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
24-hour hotline
Structured education program
Continuing education
Environmental analysis
Behavioral management
Social worker
Support groups

The Center also provides the only 24-asthma hotline in the state of New York with physician response.

The Outreach arm of the Program is the Mobil Unit which is a 40 feet van equipped to both educate and treat children with asthma. It conducts its outreaches in the public schools in Queens educating children, nurses, physical instructors and guidance counselors. It travels to underserved communities and Treats children with asthma who don’t have access to health services.

We all want the best for our children - and for the child with asthma, that means a special kind of freedom.

  • Freedom from the psychological fear of a sudden inability to breathe
  • Freedom from physical restraint and the need to ask the question, "Can I really do that without having an attack?"
  • Freedom from the emotional isolation of not being able to join in, be on the team, or, simply, be like others

Fortunately, your child can have a full and active life - and you, a more relaxed one - with the right kind of asthma management.

ALTHOUGH IT CANNOT BE CURED, ASTHMA CAN BE CONTROLLED.

New York Hospital Queens Brings Asthma Care to Children at Riis Settlement

New York Hospital Queens unveiled a newly renovated pediatric asthma mobile unit that is providing treatment directly to children at the Queensbridge Houses headquarters of Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement (Riis Settlement), in Long Island City. The van renovation and asthma care program are funded by a $326,000 grant from TransCanada through the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

A comprehensive health care team, including a pulmonologist, pediatrician, respiratory therapist and social worker, from the Pediatric Asthma Center at New York Hospital Queens staffs the mobile unit. Hadi Jabbar, M.D., director, Pediatric Asthma Center, spearheaded this program and will see patients on the mobile unit.

The mobile unit is parked at Riis Settlement (10-25 41st Avenue, Long Island City, N.Y.) every Tuesday and Friday, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Appointments are preferred. Members of the community can make an appointment by calling 718-670-1920.
