Residency Program Closure and Reduction

Effective Date: 12/01/00
Reviewed/Revised:  6/17/05; 5/5/09

Number:  9200-205

In the event of voluntary closure of ACGME residency programs, all current residents will be fully supported through the end of their residency training at The New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens.

In the event of involuntary closure of an ACGME residency program, the institution will make every effort to place the residents in a program at another institution at a comparable level or with the ACGME approval and where feasible, fully support the resident through the end of the training.

The President and CEO or his/her designee will inform the GMEC, the Designated Institutional Official and the residents as soon as possible, in the event the institution intends to reduce the size or close either a program or the hospital itself.

No residency program will voluntarily reduce the number of residents, request “inactive status”, reactivate a program from “inactive status” or withdraw a program without the approval of the Graduate Medical Education Committee.

Anthony Somogyi, M.D.

Director of Medical Education
