Urology

Director: Gerald J. Wang, MD

The Division of Urology at New York Hospital Queens (NYHQ) offers the community the most sophisticated, high-quality urological care available anywhere today.  The department’s staff includes a growing team of full-time physicians as well as voluntary attending surgeons.

We are also proud to offer the community state-of-the-art robotic surgery using the newest da Vinci® robotic system.  Our robotic surgeons have expertise in the surgical management of prostate, kidney and bladder cancers, including robotic prostatectomy, robotic partial nephrectomy, and robotic cystectomy with urinary diversion.  With more precise instrumentation and superior 3-dimensional visualization and magnification, robotic surgery enables more precise tissue handling in a minimally invasive fashion.  For patients, this translates into superior results with decreased postoperative pain and fewer side-effects from surgery.

Advantages of Robotic Surgery

  • Decreased blood loss during surgery
  • Vastly improved visualization and magnification of the surgical site
  • Decreased postoperative pain
  • Fewer sutures, which means less vulnerable to tearing and infection
  • Faster recovery and return to work

Robotic Treatment Options for Urological Conditions

  • In patients with prostate cancer, the da Vinci robot can be used to perform robotic radical prostatectomy to remove the prostate.  The vastly superior magnification and visualization help the robotic surgeon to remove the prostate successfully while minimizing the impact on functional outcomes such as urine control and erections.
  • Robotic surgery can be used in cases of bladder cancer to remove the bladder.
  • For patients with kidney cancer, robotic surgery can be used to remove the cancerous portion of the kidney while sparing the areas of normal kidney tissue.
