         VASCULAR LABORATORY

 Andy Lee, MD

Due to the rapid increase in the size of the elderly population, the incidence of vascular disease is increasing nationally. Approximately 10 percent of patients seen in a primary care setting have clinically significant atherosclerotic arterial disease.

Among people in the borough of Queens, the prevalence and severity of arterial disease is on the rise. The majority of patients with peripheral vascular disease have concomitant manifestations of coronary artery disease, hypertension and diabetes. These conditions often serve as markers for underlying peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

The Division of Vascular Surgery treats large numbers of patients with atherosclerotic occlusive disease and aneurysmal disease. Our specialists are particularly known for expertise and quality outcomes in treating complex lower extremity arterial disease, carotid artery stenosis, and thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms. We have developed a multi-disciplinary approach to thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections in conjunction with our cardiothoracic surgeons. This team approach to diseases of the entire aorta, offers patients the best opportunity for superior outcomes.  Minimally invasive office-based treatment of varicose veins is also available.

NYHQ’s new West Building features a state-of-the-art hybrid interventional operating suite, the only one of its kind in this area, which allows our surgeons the flexibility of performing the most advanced endovascular procedures with the latest imaging technology in a fully capable operative room environment.

We measure our results using the American College of Surgeons- National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), which is rapidly becoming the gold standard for measuring surgical outcomes. NYHQ is one of only 19 hospitals in New York State and 200 nationally to participate in this program, and we have measured up favorably against some of the best academic university medical centers in the U.S.
