Each year more than 800 men, women and young people provide volunteer service at The New York Hospital Queens. Among the special services to which volunteers may contribute is the donation program of the Blood Donor Center.
Call the department of Volunteer Services to arrange an interview (evening appointments are available) at (718) 670-1125 if you can commit to a minimum of 4 hours service per week for at least 3 months.
One of the biggest volunteer needs at the Blood Donor Center is setting up a blood drive.
The Blood Donor Center obtains more than 12,000 units of blood annually, supporting patients with a variety of illnesses and meeting the needs of the trauma patients treated at the Level 1 Trauma Center of New York Hospital Queens.
Your sponsorship of a community collection drive will assist the center immeasurably in our mission. All units obtained through your drive will be used here in your community... as your "gift of life."
The center will support your drive through a variety of means, providing direction and logistical support as well as materials like posters and brochures.
Make a list of people or groups to be solicited and estimate the level
of participation. If you've run drives before, obtain an old donor list.
Contact key leaders in the organizations from whom you will seek support. Help them to select captains from their organizations who will publicize the drive and recruit donors. Arrange a 'kick-off' meeting for the captains with our recruiter to motivate them and teach them their duties.
Hold the captains' meeting. The center will provide special, captain kits to direct each to be an effective recruiter. Bring a list of organization members (or employees) to this meeting and outline a detailed timetable and reporting system for the captains.
Have captains make personal visits to employees or group members. Direct contact is the most effective tool for obtaining a large turnout. Captains should ask donors about their preferred time of donation to better accommodate them. Pledges can now be placed into the Blood Drive schedule.
Call to remind donors on the Blood Drive schedule.
Arrive at least one hour before drive start time to handle last minute details and greet the Blood Drive Team. Bring the list of donors and check them off as they register. Have someone make reminder calls to scheduled donors who don't make their scheduled appointments.
Have a great time!
We will provide you with a list of the names of all who donated. Although we mail thank you's and Donor ID Cards to each donor, you may wish to thank them personally. You may also wish to send thank you letters to captains for their special support.
Congratulations On Your Successful Blood Drive!
