In 1996, the Department established
the division of cardiothoracic anesthesiology under the
direction of Ralph Slepian, MD. This division provides anesthesia
support for all cardiac surgery procedures performed at
the medical center.
Patients requiring anesthesiology
services at NYHQ can reassured that their unique physical
and emotional needs will be considered of foremost importance
and that their past medical histories will be carefully
reviewed before surgery. An anesthesiologist will discuss
with each patient what he or she can expect following surgery
and will answer all patient questions.
Patient-Controlled Analgesia
When applicable, patients are permitted
to control their own pain relief during the post-operative
period through supervised, patient-controlled analgesia.
During 1996, more than 1,300 patients participated in this
program and reported excellent results. The Department also
offers an outpatient pain consultation service for individuals
suffering from varying degrees of chronic pain.
The obstetrical division provides
around-the-clock coverage for maternity patients. All such
patients are advised to meet with the anesthesiologist to
determine the best method of care for labor and delivery.
Anesthesiologists are also available for consultation with
other physicians on procedures not performed in the NYHQ
operating room.
An environment of excellence
is provided for individuals seeking anesthesia services
at NYHQ. The Department is far below the national average
in complication rates and is dedicated to continuing education
for its physicians who, in turn, are dedicated to providing
the finest care. |
