To meet the varying dental needs of its patients the
department offers these hours:
Weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 5:00 p.m.
to 8:00 p.m.
Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m.
The Department also provides 24 hour, seven day a week
emergency coverage through the department of emergency medicine.
Over the past several years, the Department
has enlarged its general practice and oral pathology / oral
medicine training programs through federal grant awards.
These grant s have also assisted the department in its efforts
to expand services to the community. The Jamaica Health
Center provides dental care to an underserved population
with a particular focus on people who are medically compromised.
This site is an AIDS designated center and provides comprehensive
and emergency care to HIV and AIDS patients.
Implantology
The Department's second year General
Practice Residency program focuses upon dental implantology
and has enjoyed great success. The program affords patients
the opportunity to seek state-of-the-art care under the
supervision and guidance of oral surgeons, prosthodontists,
generalists, and periodontists, all specializing in various
aspects of dental implant placement and restoration. Patients
enjoy a reduced fee as part of this new program and can
rely with confidence upon the expert care being provided.
Dental Phobia
During 1996, the Department established
a dental phobia program to help those who have avoided seeing
a dentist for many years because of fear or anxiety. Through
this new programs, patients have the opportunity to overcome
these fears and successfully obtain the care that they need.
A carefully assembled, highly sensitive staff serves in
this important program, using a variety of techniques to
help the individual control, and then defeat his/her fear
of dental treatment.
Dental Lasers
Lasers have made important contributions
to modern dental practice, and the Department has been up
front in providing this cutting-edge technology to its patients.
The laser program provides soft tissue surgery.
Application
The Department's attending staff of
51 outstanding dentists represents a full range of general
practice and specialty care. This staff helps assure the
quality of all care provided and produce a sound educational
environment for dental residents at NYHQ. Each day, subspecialty
care is delivered with the support of attending staff who
are expert in their particular fields.
The Department maintains a strong affiliation with Columbia
University School of Dentistry and Oral Surgery. Columbia
senior dental students rotate through the program and gain
expertise in hospital dentistry while fulfilling their curriculum
goals. The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center's Oral
Surgery residency has become an integral part of the dental
program. NYHQ's affiliation with New York-Cornell guarantees
the availability of on-call residents 24 hours a day and
expanded oral surgery coverage for dental unit clinical
sessions. This program has enhanced the general practice
and oral pathology residencies, and has brought more complex
and advanced surgical cases to the medical center.
Grants
Since 1977, the Department has received
thirty federal grant awards, permitting it to expand services
to the Queens community. It has also been an annual recipient
of the Ryan White funding program for oral health care for
HIV / AIDS patients. We are proud of the work the Department
has done for the economically deprived, the medically compromised,
and the physically challenged. The Department's goals of
offering the very best residency training in dentistry,
delivering affordable, state-of-the-art dental care, and
providing outreach to an underserved population have been
realized, and will continue to be the focus of future initiatives. |
