Dizziness and lightheadedness

It's not unusual for pregnant women to feel dizzy or lightheaded, and fainting is a possibility. A pregnant woman's body adds about 50 percent extra blood volume to meet the needs of her unborn baby's circulation. You may feel lightheaded if you get up quickly from a sitting position, or stand for long periods of time. This is because the extra fluid pools in your lower body away from your brain. In addition, extra blood volume dilutes the concentration of blood sugar and iron levels, which can also contribute to dizziness.

If you're having dizzy spells, it's important to prevent injury from falling. Be sure to stand up slowly and hold on to the walls or other stable structures for support and balance. If you have to stand for a long period of time, flex and relax your leg and hip muscles. This will help you maintain circulation. Be sure to sleep on your side, rather than flat on your back. This will help reduce the pressure from your uterus on the large blood vessels in your abdomen. It's also important to avoid low blood sugar levels by eating frequent small meals or snacks.

Of course, you will want to let your health care provider know if you are having dizzy spells, and especially if you faint. While these are common, these symptoms might indicate other problems and need to be checked out.

Can I dye my hair or get a permanent during pregnancy?
Today's hair coloring, straightening, and permanent wave solutions are considered safe to use in pregnancy, since so little is absorbed by the scalp. But it's a good idea to wait until after the first trimester and make sure you are in an area that is well ventilated, as the fumes can be quite strong. And be aware that those increased hormone levels in pregnancy could affect how the color turns out or how well the treatment works.
