Fit Kids Queens offers participants a unique and comprehensive approach
to the treatment of childhood obesity. We are the only hospital-based
healthy lifestyle program in the borough of Queens.
This program exposes children to exercise opportunities and
teaches them exercises that they can do at home.
Children are evaluated by Aaron Turkish, M.D, pediatric gastroenterologist and director of Fit Kids Queens, at the Theresa Lang Children's Ambulatory Care Center. Children undergo a thorough medical evaluation and screening for complications of childhood obesity such as diabetes, fatty liver, high cholesterol and vitamin D deficiency. After an evaluation, children may begin the exercise and nutrition program. Children return for a medical follow-up every two months to monitor their progress.
Exercise classes are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at a nearby exercise facility located at the New York Hospital Queens' Cardiac Health Center at 174-03 Horace Harding Expressway in Fresh Meadows. The classes provide children with a safe and non-competitive environment to be active with their peers. Our exercise physiologist also teaches the children exercises they can do easily at home. Children who cannot attend the program are given information about resources within the community for low-cost or free exercise opportunities.
