The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Kyrenia Heart Center is the only interventional cardiology center in the county of Queens and one of the few centers in New York offering access to all the latest devices used in catheter-based treatment of heart disease. In one of three, state-of-the-art, digital cineflouroscopic laboratories, highly skilled specialists perform radiographic procedures to diagnose and treat a variety of cardiac problems. They employ a range of interventional techniques designed to improve blood flow to the heart and decrease the need for open-heart surgery. As the volume of cardiac procedures has grown, the program has maintained an outstanding procedural success rate (>95%). Balloon angioplasty, coronary stent implantation and coronary atherectomy are among the services offered. Kyrenia Heart Center uses only the newest, most effective and studied devices. The Angiojet device for extraction of thrombus and the Cutting Balloon for in-stent restenosis treatment have reduced the incidence of major adverse cardiac events. The Percusurge device has made primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) less hazardous. Also, ongoing clinical trials at Kyrenia equip our specialists to bring new therapies quickly and safely to our patients. With its huge Medicare population, Queens provides the Center with a large experience in elder-care, guaranteeing Kyrenia's proficiency with this normally higher risk group. Focus has also been given to reaching an ever-larger female cardiac population, insuring that Kyrenia will lead in efforts to meet the needs of this underserved population. For these groups as for all, compassion and concern for quality of life remain central to our approach. |

Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Kyrenia Heart Center is part of the premiere cardiac surgery program in New York City, offering the clinical expertise of surgeons associated with The New York Presbyterian Hospital and The Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Our doctors have been recognized for their superb outcomes in both routine and high-risk cardiac patients. The cardiac surgery team works closely with its clinical, research, and administrative staffs to provide a complete range of cardiothoracic services that employ the latest technology for all surgical diseases of the chest. Our surgeons' extensive experience allows them to offer a wide range of surgical options to patients, including techniques for individuals once thought poor candidates for surgery. Coronary artery bypass surgery, both on and off the heart lung machine, valve repair and replacement, repair of aortic dissections and aneurysms, implantation of ventricular assist devices and repairs of ventricular aneurysms are among the services available at the Center. Minimally invasive heart surgery is offered when clinically appropriate, making possible results that are as safe and precise as those obtained with traditional surgery, but with significantly decreased postoperative pain, recovery time, and cost. As academic surgeons, our doctors are proud to educate and train
surgical residents and fellows rotating from our own hospital and from
the Manhattan campus. These doctors are encouraged to continue the tradition of
superb care and compassion they have learned at The Kyrenia Heart Center. |

The Cardiac Health Center is an education and training facility developed by The New York Hospital Queens. It was created especially for people who have had a heart attack, heart surgery, balloon angioplasty, or angina, and was designed to improve health status and reduce the potential for future cardiac events among all at risk. The Center's program is recommended for people with a high-risk profile for heart disease, as well as those with known heart disease who want to improve their cardiovascular health. The Center's goal is to understand and support patients while helping them regain the confidence needed to return to excellent physical health after a cardiac event. Most important to defeating cardiovascular disease, (and eliminating it as the number one cause of disability and death), is early detection and early treatment. Studies show that almost everyone can become heart healthy by following a proper diet and exercise program, along with a routine health care plan and the elimination of tobacco products. The Cardiac Health Center's education programs in nutrition and exercise can help many make the lifestyle changes that will mean continued health long into the future. |

Almost 5 million Americans suffer from heart failure and greater than 700,000 cases occur each year. Heart failure is the most common cause of hospitalization in individuals greater than 65 years of age. It is the common final outcome of a number of diseases that affect the heart, and its incidence is increasing each year.
The Heart Failure Center at Kyrenia Heart provides diagnostic and comprehensive disease management strategies to patients with heart failure. Coordinated outpatient, inpatient, and at-home services provide a smooth continuum of care. The goal of the Center is to identify and treat any reversible causes of heart failure, and to restore patients with chronic heart failure to a better quality of life. Our patients receive a comprehensive evaluation, and then our physicians, in collaboration with the arrhythmia service, interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery, apply aggressive disease management strategies and patient education to treat the condition. Strategies include biventricular pacemaker and AICD implantation, coronary revascularization by catheter or surgery and valvular and cardiac remodeling surgery. The Center also conducts clinical research and participates in multi-site
studies so that our heart failure patients have the opportunity to receive
the newest therapeutic options available. Our affiliation with the Columbia
cardiac transplant program means that our patients also have easy and
rapid access to all HF management strategies including transplantation. |

Arrhythmias of many different types and degrees of severity, affect an estimated 1 in 1,000 Americans. Some cause symptoms that are disturbing but not life-threatening; others can cause death within minutes. The Electrophysiology (EP) laboratory at the Kyrenia Heart Center is the only comprehensive adult electrophysiology laboratory in the county of Queens, equipped with state-of-the-art digital fluoroscopy equipment designed especially for electrophysiology procedures.
The Center offers a variety of services to help heart failure patients enjoy a better quality of life. The clinical electrophysiology program offers care to the patient with syncope, and abnormalities of cardiac rhythm including bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias. The laboratory is equipped with the ability to perform electro-anatomic (biosense) mapping and ablation of cardiac arrhythmias. Other procedures including the In-Sync Resynchronization System, insertion of pacemakers and implantable cardioverter- defibrillators are performed and laser equipment is available for lead extraction of pacemaker & defibrillator leads. The Kyrenia Center is dedicated both to decreasing morbidity and improving the quality of life of our patients. Through participation in clinical trials, our specialists attain the experience and knowledge necessary to bring the most current and effective treatments to the arrhythmia patient. |

Non-invasive cardiology detects cardiac disease using technology such as ultrasound and nuclear imaging. Methods to identify individuals at risk for heart disease, heart failure or cardiac events have been developed in order to reduce hospitalization and the number of deaths. Throughout the years, tremendous progress has been made with non-invasive techniques, many of which are now able to detect and grade the severity of disease involving heart muscle or valves and the risk for heart attacks so that appropriate treatment may be given. The focus of the non-invasive cardiology team at the Kyrenia Heart Center is to perform, analyze and interpret diagnostic tests. Physicians combine their clinical expertise with the latest, most effective tools in the fight against cardiovascular disorders. The full service laboratory is home to all the most modern equipment, and provides all modalities of echocardiography including 2D and 3D Doppler echocardiography, stress and dobutamine echocardiography, trans esophageal echocardiography and tissue Doppler techniques. In collaboration with nuclear medicine, myocardial imaging techniques are used to detect the presence and significance of coronary artery disease. Multigated acquisition images of the heart are also available to assess cardiac pump and valvular function. Together these tests help cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons decide upon appropriate treatment for patients with heart disease. The role of non-invasive cardiac imaging is ever-expanding. Our use of cutting-edge laboratory technology,
together with our research into new cardiac imaging techniques, help to
detect individuals at risk for heart attacks and also provide valuable
information for guiding therapy after heart attacks and assessing its efficacy. |
