 To
support efforts to provide ambulatory surgery procedures or a minimal
hospital stay, the department provides the highest standard
of care and utilizes the most modern equipment to perform
minimally invasive endoscopic and laser surgery for
procedures such as hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. For
these procedures we utilize endoscopic techniques to
explore and treat uterine, tubal, ovarian, and other
pelvic pathology. This requires smaller incisions,
less post-operative pain, and permits faster recuperation
and return to normal activities. During the year 2006 – approximately
1,718 gyn surgeries were performed.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
administers several divisions:
Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine:
Director; Daniel W. Skupski, MD The
Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine provides consultation
and treatment for high risk pregnancies, such as those
complicated by diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension,
and fetal growth problems. Consultation is provided for
the general obstetrician for a wide array of problems found
during pregnancy. In addition, both Level III ultrasound
( state-of-the-art) for the diagnosis of birth defects
and amniocentesis for the detection of chromosomal problems
such as Down's Syndrome are available and recommended for
many patients. The Division provides antenatal fetal heart
rate testing ( the non-stress test) for pregnancies in
which the fetus is at risk. In 2006, the Division performed
approximately 1,858 non-stress tests for referred patients,
5,393 Level II ultrasound examinations, 367 amniocentesis
procedures, in addition to fetal echocardiograms ( in conjunction
with the Division of Pediatric Cardiology).
To arrange for consultation or non-stress
testing, please contact Dotty McNeely at (718) 670-1534.
Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility:
Director; Tony Tsai, MD
The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology
and Infertility has recently moved to new facilities in
Flushing. The office is now within walking distance from
the hospital. The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology
and Infertility provides a full spectrum of state-of-the-art
medical and surgical treatments in assisted reproductive
technologies. Additionally, the service provides expert
care in all aspects of reproductive endocrinology and gynecology.
We specialize in surgical management of pelvic pain, endometriosis,
fibroids, uterine septum and asherman syndrome. We have
performed over 100 laparoscopic myomectomies and hysterectomies
also known as “Band-aid hysterectomy and Band-aid myomectomy”.
We were the first in Queens to popularize LSH, laparoscopic
supracervical hysterectomy. This procedure allows the preservation
of the cervix when removing the uterus. The cervix may
play a role in female sexual satisfaction therefore we
try not to remove it unless absolutely necessary. We are
also the first to implement a staged laparoscopic/hysteroscopic
myomectomy approach. For fibroids that are too large to
safely remove from the uterus during a single surgery a
staged procedure is performed and the rest of the myoma
is removed. This technique has also been applied to uterine
septums and adhesions.

The team members of the gynecologic
oncology service is committed to actively pursuing minimally
invasive laparoscopic procedures for diagnosis, staging
and treatment of gynecologic malignancies. The service
offers the option of radical vaginal trachelectomy (radical
removal of cervix only) or radical vaginal hysterectomy
for appropriately selected early stage cervix cancer. Radical
Trachelectomy is an important option for women with cervix
cancer.

Somogyi, provided over 10,300 patient visits during 2003.
With the changes in the provision of health care which are
being experienced in the New York area, we have responded
with increased and attractive outpatient programs. The Family
Health Center (FHC) in Flushing represents an outreach and
community service initiative. Staffed for women's health
services by members of our OB-GYN attending staff who work
and live in the community, the FHC has attracted a loyal
following of community residents.
Our nursing staff continues
to provide the educational base upon which patient comfort,
reassurance and confidence rests. This is accomplished via
"Prepared Childbirth" classes, counseling regarding
women's health and planning issues, assessments and education
regarding sexually transmitted diseases, and preventive
services, including mammography and osteoporosis screening.
Our emphasis on family-centered care begins with our nurses
and social service support. |
