Thanks to modern advances in technology
and ongoing research in surgery, many surgical procedures
can now be performed in a “minimally invasive” manner,
meaning incisions are smaller and recovery is quicker. The
procedures below are used to treat endometriosis, congenital
abnormalities, pelvic adhesions, pelvic pain, fibroids,
and other diagnoses. Common minimally invasive surgical techniques
include:
- Hysteroscopy: This surgical procedure uses
a slender, light-transmitting telescope, called a hysterscope,
to view and operate inside the uterus. The purpose
is to create a uterine cavity best suited for embryo
transplantation and/or pregnancy.
- Laparoscopy: This form of minimally invasive
surgery uses a laparoscope to view inside the abdomen
and pelvis. The laparoscope allows surgeons to
perform procedures without making major incisions that
can lead to long recovery times. Common laparoscopic
procedures include tubal repair, ovarian cystectomy,
lysis of adhesions, and treatment of endometriosis.
