The Center for Dental and Oral Medicine provides a full spectrum of dental services to the people of Queens. Its post-graduate training programs in oral pathology/oral medicine, general practice dentistry, and prosthetics attract the most accomplished dental graduates in the United States and Canada. Sixteen residents provide dental care under the supervision of over 50 general dentists and specialists from Queens, Manhattan and Nassau counties.

The center's attending staff of over 50 outstanding dentists represents a full range of general practice and specialty care. This staff helps assure the quality of all care provided and produces a sound educational environment for dental residents at New York Hospital Queens. Subspecialty care is delivered with the support of attending staff expert in their particular fields.

Implantology/Prosthodontics

New York Hospital Queens offers a dental specialty center for prosthodontics and implant dentistry in downtown Flushing. The staff treats complex dental cases, offers a higher level of professional care—that is affordable.

The center fabricates dentures, fixed bridges, crowns, placement and restoration of implants as well as treating facial deformities. For those who have missing teeth, dental implants have become the preferred choice for many patients.

The center affords patients the opportunity to seek state-of-the-art care under the supervision and guidance of oral surgeons, prosthodontists, generalists, and periodontists, all specializing in various aspects of dental implant placement and restoration.

Affiliations

The department maintains a strong affiliation with Columbia University School of Dentistry and Oral Surgery. Columbia University senior dental students rotate through the program and gain expertise in hospital dentistry while fulfilling their curriculum goals.

The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Oral Surgery residency has become an integral part of the department as well. New York Hospital Queens' affiliation with NewYork-Presbyterian/Cornell guarantees the availability of on-call residents 24 hours a day and expanded oral surgery coverage for dental unit clinical sessions. This affiliation has enhanced the general practice and oral pathology residencies, and has brought more complex and advanced surgical cases to the hospital.

Recognition and Future Goals

Over the past several years, the center has enlarged its general practice and oral pathology/oral medicine training programs through federal grant awards. These grants have also assisted the department in its efforts to expand services to the community.

Since 1977, the department has received over thirty federal grant awards, permitting it to expand services to the Queens community. It has also been an annual recipient of the Ryan White funding program for oral health care for HIV and AIDS patients. The department has done significant work for the economically deprived, the medically compromised and the physically challenged. The department's goals of offering the very best residency training in dentistry, delivering affordable, state-of-the-art dental care, and providing outreach to an underserved population. These goals have been realized and will continue to be the focus of future initiatives.
