Ends With Presentation of Five Awards


On Research Day 2013, five physicians-in-training accepted Lang Research Awards for excellence on behalf of their research teams. The award recipients had each served as principal investigator for their respective studies. They are: 

Wallace Wang, M.D., Fellow in Medicine (Gastroenterology), for the oral presentation “Poor Outcomes in Clostridium Difficile Enteritis is Associated with Low Vitamin D Levels.”

Christopher Tan, M.D., Fellow in Surgery (Geriatrics), for the oral presentation “Cognitive Changes After Surgery in the Elderly: Does Minimally Invasive Surgery Influence the Incidence of Postoperative Cognitive Changes Compared to Open Colon Surgery?”

M. Oprea, M.D., Fellow in Medicine (Geriatrics), for the poster presentation “Glycemic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Transitioning From Acute Care Hospital to the Nursing Home.”

Masud Habibullah, M.D., PGY-1 in Medicine (Gastroenterology), for the poster presentation “Colonic Lesions Found During Retrograde Double Balloon Enteroscopy for Obscure Bleeding Following a Negative Colonoscopy.”

Alexander Ramirez Valderrama, M.D., PG-4 in Surgery, for the case report “Minimally Invasive Temporary Loop Ileostomy for Severe Clostridium Difficile Colitis.”

Research Day began with a continental breakfast in the Lang Auditorium lobby and concluded with an awards ceremony and luncheon. The five-hour event featured:

  • Keynote address. Keynote speaker, Manikkam Suthanthiran, M.D., presented “Transplantation: Successful collaboration Between Clinicians and Researchers, Resulting in a Medical Miracle.”  Dr. Suthanthiran highlighted the scientific discoveries that have resulted in outstanding outcomes of transplantation. 
  • Research presentations. This year’s Research Day encompassed 14 oral and 70 poster presentations. Residents and fellows from 18 departments and divisions participated.
  • Award ceremony. Dr. Phyllis August, Lang Research Center director, presented five Lang Research Awards for excellence in research. Winning projects are selected for soundness of research methodology, potential impact on patients, and the quality of the presentation itself.
