Cristina Gutierrez, MD

Dr. Gutierrez has been Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency at New York Hospital of Queens since November 2012, in addition to being a Critical Care attending. Dr. Gutierrez finished her fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 2011 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in New York City. She is originally from Colombia, where she had medical education at Universidad de La Sabana.

Prior to residency, Dr. Gutierrez worked as a post-doctoral fellow in Neuroimmunology at Harvard Medical School, where her work focused on treatments for the animal model of Multiple Sclerosis. Her work at the time produced publications and multiple oral and abstract presentations at international congresses. This work sparked her interest in clinical research, and she has remained active during her training and since joining the faculty at NYHQ. Projects that have led to publications and oral presentations at national conferences include research on withdrawal of care from cancer patients in the ICU, and acceptance of palliative care in Asians in the ICU. Her main research interests are palliative care in critically ill patients, risk factors for complication post thrombolysis in stroke, and management of patients with respiratory failure on the general wards. Dr. Gutierrez is also involved in many QI projects to improve patient care in the ICU, including creation of current guidelines for management and diagnosis of delirium in the MICU, and she is currently involved in the improvement of nutrition in patients in all Intensive Care Units at NYHQ.

Dr. Gutierrez is actively involved in teaching of fellows, residents, medical students and other staff. She is the coordinator for simulation training of Internal Medicine residents at NYHQ, where she oversees procedure training, ventilator management, and is currently working on Mock Codes and RRT’s. Moreover she is an instructor for the Fundamentals of Critical Care Support course at NYHQ. She has also won the resident-elected “Teacher of the Year Award” successively in her two years on the faculty at NYHQ.
