The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens remains active in the treatment of malignant diseases. The emphasis is of rectal cancer anorectal problems. Drs. Christopher Foglia, Howard and Steven Chao take an interdisciplinary approach to rectal cancer. Most patients require endoscopic ultrasonography and CT scan to the best curative treatment. Occasionally additional testing with MRI or PET scan may be needed to decide on your best treatment.

In addition to sphincter saving rectal we also use techniques to remove these cancers. When indicated we some rectal cancers through an anal approach in our same unit under local anesthesia. Some patients have if surgery is used in combination with radiation and/. Using this multidisciplinary approach guarantees advanced treatment of their disease, usually without a colostomy.

We also use advanced laparoscopic techniques to treat most including cancer. This often allows our patients a stay, less pain and earlier return to normal activities.

As the population is aging, we see many people with other . We treat rectal prolapse using several different approaches. This is meant to individualize care. In addition to associated and past we inquire about bowel activity (constipation, diarrhea), bowel control (continence), medications, daily . We also diagnose and treat all diseases of the anus .We see patients with rectal bleeding, hemorrhoids, fissure, abscess, fistula and masses. A large number of our patients are in the office.
