The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens remains active in the treatment of benign and malignant diseases. The emphasis is treatment of rectal cancer and benign anorectal problems. Under the care and direction of Howard Tiszenkel, M.D., a board certified colon and rectal surgeon and a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, we use an interdisciplinary approach to treat rectal cancer. Most patients require endoscopic ultrasonography and CT scan to help decide the best curative treatment. Occasionally additional testing with MRI or PET scan may be needed to decide on your best treatment.

In addition to sphincter saving rectal resections we also use advanced laparoscopic techniques to remove these cancers. When indicated we can remove some rectal cancers through an anal approach in our same day surgery unit under local anesthesia. Some patients have improved outcomes if surgery is used in combination with radiation and/or chemotherapy. Using this multidisciplinary approach guarantees our patients advanced treatment of their disease, usually without a colostomy.

We also use advanced laparoscopic techniques to treat most colon diseases including cancer. This often allows our patients a shorter hospital stay, less pain and earlier return to normal activities.

As the population is aging, we see many people with other rectal problems. We treat rectal prolapse using several different approaches. This is meant to individualize care. In addition to associated medical problems and past surgery we inquire about bowel activity (constipation, diarrhea), bowel control (continence), medications, daily activity and lifestyle. We also diagnose and treat all diseases of the anus and rectum. We see patients with rectal bleeding, hemorrhoids, fissure, abscess, fistula and masses. A large number of our patients are treated painlessly in the office.
