Milk Free For Breast Feeding Mothers

 

                                       A guide to being milk free when breastfeeding

 

If you are breastfeeding a baby with allergies, you may be advised to avoid eating the offending food, as there may be traces of the food protein in the breast milk. One of the most common food allergen for an infant is cow’s milk. Thank goodness that about 80% of children out-grow their milk allergy by the age of three or four.

 

Suggestions to try:

  • Trial a milk-free diet for 1-2 weeks.
  • If you do not see any improvement go back to your usual diet.
  • It may be helpful to keep a simple food diary, recording any symptoms your baby may experience.
  • If there is a family history of allergies it is best to exclusively breastfeed and to delay introducing solids until your baby is six months old.
  • Your baby should avoid milk, soy and eggs until she/he is a year and peanuts until three year’s of age.
  • It is important when following a milk-free diet that you include other foods that contain calcium and protein.

Foods rich in calcium choose at least three servings of a milk alternative, such as 1 cup enriched soy milk, enriched rice milk, ½ cup of soy yogurt or ½ cup soy ice cream.

  • To have a good intake of protein choose at least two servings from meat and meat alternative group. These include lean meats, chicken, eggs, cooked dried beans or lentils.

               Avoiding Milk and Milk Products 

 

     Milk and milk products appear in many forms. When you are shopping you   

     need to avoid the following ingredients.

 

     Buttermilk                    Evaporate milk

     Butter                           Goat’s milk

     Cheese                         Ice cream

     Chocolate                    Margarine containing milk solids

     Condensed milk          Margarine with milk solids

     Cottage cheese           Milk powder

     Cow’s milk                   Ricotta cheese    

     Cream                          Sour cream

     Cream cheese             Yogurt  

 

     There are many foods that can replace milk and milk products Such as!

Soy milk, Tofu, fruit sorbet, soy ice cream, Milk free margarine.

        Tips to Follow

  • Be particularly careful when choosing margarine.
  • Be careful of foods such as biscuits, puddings, sauces and soups… as they may contain milk.
  • Always read labels !!!
  • Plan your meals and bring a  well pre-thought-out food list to the food market.
  • Your calcium needs are very high:  It can be difficult meeting your daily calcium requirement if you are avoiding milk and milk products.
  • Usually a breastfeeding woman on a milk-free diet will require a calcium supplement

   Recommended daily allowances is a range from 1000 

   to 1300mg/day
