The Center for Pediatric Cardiology
Since October of 1996, NYHQ has been able
to provide the children of our community with the finest
comprehensive pediatric cardiac care available. The focal
point of the Center is an echocardiology system that represents
the latest in technological advances and is the only one
of its kind in the metropolitan area. Using this technology,
the Center's full-time pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Lisa
Rutkovsky, is able to provide the most up-to-date diagnostic
care, including fetal echocardiograms.
The Pediatric Asthma Center
The only such facility in Queens and
one of the few in the nation dedicated solely to the care
of children with asthma, the has been helping children breathe easier
since 1994. it has successfully combined treatment, education,
and outreach to serve an average of 6,000 patients per year,
and in particular, children from low income families. Emergency
room visit and hospitalization rates have decreased dramatically
among regular patients of the center. Also featured is a
24-hour Asthma Hot-Line [(718) 670-1920] available to Center
patients and ensuring quick access to the treatment team.
A new 34-foot Mobile Pediatric Asthma
Center was purchased in 1997 and was customized to meet
the needs of the Center's patients. The mobile unit travels
to numerous health fairs, community centers, schools and
houses of worship throughout Queens, offering education
and asthma screening to children at risk. The mobile unit
has significantly augmented the community outreach initiative.
The important mission to area schools allows staff members
to address the students, teachers, school administrators,
and members of PTA's on the issue of asthma. During these
visits for formal education, the Asthma Center staff has
distributed posters, booklets, and coloring books to students.
Neonatology
Under the direction of Dr. Harry
Moreau, the Division of Neonatology has made major progress.
With its designation as a "Level 3" nursery, the
department's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can care
for infants weighing as little as 800 grams ( 1 and 1/2
pounds). The NICU is the only of its kind in the borough
of Queens, accomodating 14 infants and maintaining neonatologists
on duty around the clock.
The division has instituted programs
for hearing screening in newborns, and has started a newborn
ophthalmology program for premature infants who have required
ventilator treatment or whose mothers had infection during
pregnancy.
