Pediatric Inpatient Unit

Caring for young, sick patients requires special knowledge, special skills and even a special setting.  These can all be found in New York Hospital Queens' 15-bed pediatric unit for children and teens – one of the newest of its kind in Queens.  It offers modern and comfortable patient care rooms and private consultation rooms, all designed to offer the sick child the most personal care possible.

The entire unit is designed with a theme of the Queens community and expressions of the different cultures that our deparmtent cares for. It features child sized furniture, play areas, books, toys, TVs/VCRs/DVD and games.

Each child is cared for by a team of pediatric and subspecialty physicians, nurse clinicians and nurse practitioners, a respiratory therapist, social workers and ancillary personnel, who work together to meet each child’s physical, emotional and social needs in a friendly and caring manner.

Through the hospital’s Child Life Program, dedicated staff help each child understand and cope with hospitalization through art therapy and play.  The child life coordinator and specially trained staff maintain two playrooms – one for young children and the other for older children – to assist young patients with the stress and anxiety that often accompany hospitalization and medical procedures.

Parents are encouraged to stay overnight with their children, and comfortable sleeper chairs are provided in each patient’s room.  In addition, a number of complimentary amenities are available, including a continental breakfast for parents seven days a week.  A pediatric fact sheet is provided to parents in four languages (English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean), as well as patient amenity kits that include deodorant, soap, shampoo, comb, toothpaste and a toothbrush.
