Caring for young, sick patients requires special knowledge, special
skills and even a special setting. These can all be found in New
York Hospital Queens' 20-bed pediatric unit for children and teens – one
of the newest of its kind in Queens. It offers modern and
comfortable patient care rooms all designed to offer the sick child the
most personal care possible.
There is child sized furniture, play areas, books, toys,
TVs/DVDs/Wii/laptop computers and games.
Each child is cared for by a team of pediatric and sub-specialty
physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers and ancillary
personnel, who work together to meet each child’s physical, emotional
and social needs in an expert, friendly and caring manner.
Through the hospital’s Child Life Program, dedicated staff help each
child understand and cope with hospitalization through art therapy and
play. The Director of Child Life and the Child Life staff maintain
the playroom and assist young patients with the stress and anxiety that
often accompany hospitalization and medical procedures.
Parents are encouraged to stay overnight with their children, and
comfortable sleeper chairs are provided in each patient’s room.
Telephone and television are available without charge. In
addition, one parent is provided with daily meals, so that the parent
does not need to leave the child’s bedside to eat.
A pediatric fact sheet is provided to parents in four languages (English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean), as well as patient amenity kits that include deodorant, soap, shampoo, comb, toothpaste and a toothbrush.
The Pediatric Inpatient Unit’s staff aims to provide expert care in a nurturing and comfortable setting.
