Flushing, N.Y., January 4, 2010 – To help area residents understand how problems that affect the bones, muscles and joint can be treated, as well as the latest information available in arthritis, New York Hospital Queens (NYHQ) will offer a free community symposium on Monday, January 25, 2010, from 1 p.m.- 3 p.m. in the hospital’s Lang Auditorium at 56-45 Main Street (at Booth Memorial Avenue) in Flushing, N.Y.

Each year, thousands of people in Queens experience disorders of the bones, joints and muscles. The good news is that orthopaedic problems are highly treatable and new surgical techniques have been developed that are less invasive and allow for faster recovery. There has also been tremendous progress in rehabilitation and pain management techniques which can help patients avoid surgery or aid in their recovery when surgery is necessary.

The symposium will feature presentations by the hospital’s medical staff that will help those in attendance better understand arthritis and the musculoskeletal system as well as the comprehensive treatment and rehabilitative options offered at NYHQ and a newly-opened out patient center in Fresh Meadows. For a full agenda, please click here.

There will also be a discussion on new orthopaedic procedures such as joint resurfacing that are minimally invasive, allow shorter recovery times and can reduce the risk of infections and other complications. Many of these procedures are widely used in Europe, but are only offered at select hospitals in the United States. NYHQ is leading the way in Queens to offer these services.

New York Hospital Queens is a member of the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System and an affiliate of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
