Flushing, N.Y., January 25, 2010 – Each year, thousands of people in Queens experience disorders of the bones, joints and muscles. The good news is that orthopaedic problems are highly treatable and new surgical techniques have been developed that are less invasive and allow for faster recovery. There has also been tremendous progress in rehabilitation and pain management techniques that can help patients avoid surgery or aid in recovery when surgery is necessary.

Today, New York Hospital Queens (NYHQ) held a free community symposium at the hospital to help area residents understand how problems that affect the bones, muscles and joints, including arthritis, can be treated.

The symposium featured presentations about the musculoskeletal system as well as the comprehensive treatment and rehabilitative options offered at NYHQ and in a newly-opened outpatient center in Fresh Meadows. Included was discussion on new orthopaedic procedures such as joint resurfacing that are minimally invasive, allow shorter recovery times and can reduce the risk of infections and other complications. Many of these procedures are widely used in Europe, but are only offered at select hospitals in the United States. NYHQ is leading the way in Queens to offer these services.
