                       NYHQ Provides Free Stroke Risk Assessments and Lectures to the Community

Flushing, N.Y., May 7, 2013 — Medical and nursing staff from New York Hospital Queens provided free stroke risk assessments to close to 80 members of the community in recognition of National Stroke Awareness Month. Participants also attended lectures on stroke, seizures, multiple sclerosis, back pain and headaches, and had questions answered by the hospital’s medical experts.

Stroke is the #4 killer in the U.S., and is a leading cause of adult disability. Each year, about 800,000 people in the U.S. suffer from a stroke.

The NYHQ Neuroscience Institute is comprised of several specialty centers — the Center for Developmental Disabilities, the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, the New York State Designated Stroke Center, the Multiple Sclerosis Center and the Neuromuscular/Spine Center.

A physician assistant reviews a participant’s stroke risk assessment and offers risk-lowering advice.



According to the National Stroke Association, high blood pressure is the most important risk factor for stroke. NYHQ’s stroke risk assessments always include a blood pressure reading.



New York Hospital Queens provided close to 80 stroke risk assessments in recognition of Stroke Awareness Month.
